Free Reindeer Crochet Pattern

Now before going through this free reindeer crochet pattern, let’s check some pattern notes of abbreviations and materials

  • MR: Magic ring/ Magic circle
  • Sc: Single crochet stitch
  • Inc: Single crochet increase stitch
  • Dec: Single crochet decrease stitch
  • Hdc: Half double crochet stitch
  • Dc: Double crochet stitch
  • BLO: Back loop only
  • FLO: Front loop only
  • Ss: Slip stitch
  • […] … x time: Repeat instructions x times
  • (…): Number of stitches in each round
  • {…}: Work instructions within brackets into the same stitch

This sport-weight yarn is one of my favorite yarns for making amigurumi toys and I also used it to make this reindeer. There are a lot of colors available for you to choose from. These are some alternatives you might need to refer to:

I use this Hamanaka hook size of 2.3 mm and you also need some tools and accessories if you don’t have them yet

Now let’s get started crocheting the reindeer.

Arms (x2)

Start with maroon yarn

  • 1: sc 6 into MR (6)
  • 2: inc 6 (12)
  • 3: [inc, sc 3] 3 times (15)
  • 4-5 (2 rounds): sc 15 (15)

Change to orange yarn, and put the maroon yarn tail at the front to make the cuff

  • 6: BLO sc 15 (15)
  • 7: sc 15 (15)
  • 8: dec, sc 13 (14)
  • 9: sc 14 (14)
  • 10: dec, sc 12 (13)
  • 11: sc 13 (13)
  • 12: dec, sc 11 (12)
  • 13-14 (2 rounds): sc 12 (12)

Stuff as you go

  • 15: dec, sc 10 (11)
  • 16-17 (2 rounds): sc 11 (11)
  • 18: dec, sc 9 (10)
  • 19-20 (2 rounds): sc 10 (10)
  • 21: dec, sc 8 (9)

End stuffing

  • 23-23 (2 rounds): sc 9 (9)

Fasten off, and leave a long tail for sewing.

  • To make the cuff: use the maroon yarn tail at round 5, join the hook into the remaining loops of round 5, make sure the maroon part is facing you and do: FLO sc 15 (15)

Fasten off and weave in ends.

Legs (x2)

Start with maroon yarn

  • 1: sc 6 into MR (6)
  • 2: inc 6 (12)
  • 3: [inc, sc] 6 times (18)
  • 4: [inc, sc 2] 6 times (24)
  • 5-6 ( 2 rounds): sc 24 (24)
  • 7: sc 7, dec 5, sc 7 (19)

Change to orange yarn, put the maroon yarn tail at the front to make the hem

  • 8: BLO sc 6, dec 3, sc 7 (16) (use normal decrease stitches)
  • 9-10 (2 rounds): sc 16 (16)

Start stuffing

  • 11: sc 6, dec 2, sc 6 (14)
  • 12-14 (3 rounds): sc 14 (14)

End stuffing

Left leg

  • 15: sc 8 (8)
  • Fold and crochet on both layers sc 6

Fasten off, and leave a long tail for sewing.

Right leg

  • Fold and crochet on both layers sc 6

Fasten off, leave a long tail for sewing.

  • To make the hem: use the maroon yarn tail at round 7, join the hook into the remaining loops of round 7, make sure the maroon part is facing you and do: FLO sc 19 (19)

Fasten off and weave in ends.

Body

Use orange yarn

Assembly

You might need to watch my video tutorials on sewing and embroidery on my Youtube channel

  • Sew the nose to the head.
  • Sew the horns to the head from round 23 to round 24.
  • Sew the ears to the head from round 23.
  • Use black yarn to embroider the eyes to the head from round 12 to round 20.
  • Use white yarn to embroider a few cross stitches on the maroon part of the head.
  • Sew the head to the body.
  • Sew the belly on the body from round 11 to round 26.
  • Sew the legs to the body from round 8 to round 12.
  • Sew the arms to the body from round 24 to round 27.
  • Stuff the tail then sew to the back from round 5 of the body.
  • Fold the scarf, put on the neck, and sew row 1 to row 26 to close the scarf.
